Philosophy

Throughout my career I have had the privilege to experience many different educational systems. I began teaching High School Biology and Middle School Science in the UK, I had a taster of the IB DP programme while working at Jakarta International School. I have worked at the Primary level teaching the English National Curriculum and also the inquiry method of the IB PYP.

As a Leader

 

  • Creating a strong cohesive team who have a shared vision and are following a clear plan to achieve and develop the aims of the school. 

  • Creating a school environment where staff are motivated and put student learning at the heart of all they do.  Where actions are reflected on and are seen as positive learning moments.

  • Developing a supportive and collaborative culture throughout the school. Working in a collaborative manner, trusting and empowering others.  Working through problems together to find the best possible solution.  Taking time to think and reflect before making crucial decisions.

  • Taking time to listen carefully to staff and provide support 

  • Being firm but fair when decision making, taking time to problem solve and think find the best possible solutions.

  • Celebrating diversity and develop compassionate international mindedness, within the diverse cultural life of a school community.

  • Being a life long learner and continue to grow and develop thinking, by building professional networks, collaborating with others and participating in external learning opportunities.

In the Classroom

​

  • Creating a learning environment where students are free to ask questions, mistakes are seen as positive learning moments, and students are willing to challenge themselves.  

  • Encouraging students to wonder, question and hypothesize, and to test and inquire and problem solve in a real world context.

  • Unlocking student’s prior knowledge, encourage them to make connections and construct deeper meaning about an idea within authentic contexts.

  • Providing students with opportunities to collaborate, share and develop understanding. 

  • Promoting trans-disciplinary skills and dispositions such as self-management, thinking and social skills by setting clear expectations and being a role model.

  • Encouraging students to become critical thinkers, use thinking routines and provide time for reflection and revision.

  • Integrating purposeful use of IT in the classroom as a way for students record, reflect and present learning. 

  • Developing meaningful assessments using a variety of AFL techniques, using rubrics for assessing learning and together with students, and create explicit targets and criteria which allow students to accurately demonstrate their learning and set goals.
